¡Hola, hola!
No había podido publicar en los últimos días ya que uno de mis gatitos estaba enfermo y debía cuidarlo. La preocupación no me dejaba concentrar para terminar los borradores de los posts de la semana. Afortunadamente ya se encuentra mejor y recuperándose cada día más. Así que...¡procedamos con el contenido de que les he preparado!
Hoy quiero platicar de un tema clave para todos los que dibujamos cómic, manga o ilustraciones en general: la importancia de las referencias y dónde hallar ese destello de creatividad que a veces parece escurridizo.
Comencemos estableciendo ¿Por qué valen tanto las referencias?
1. Aceleran tu proceso creativo. Cuando tienes un recurso visual al que volver, no pierdes tiempo tratando de inventar de cero una pose, un atuendo o un detalle arquitectónico.
2. Mejoran la calidad de tu trabajo. Observar fotos, esculturas o ilustraciones de otros artistas te ayuda a asimilar proporciones, luces, texturas y estilos que, con la práctica, pasarán a formar parte de tu repertorio visual.
3. Evitan errores de perspectiva y anatomía. Tener un modelo—ya sea humano, un objeto o un entorno—reduce la probabilidad de que tu dibujo quede “raro” o forzado.
Ahora bien, cómo encontrar buenos puntos de partida en nuestro proceso.
A continuación, te comparto mis lugares favoritos (¡y gratuitos!) para buscar referencias:
***1. Bancos de imágenes libres***
***• Unsplash, Pexels y Pixabay:*** variedad de fotos de personas, paisajes, vehículos y mucho más.
***• Gratispik (versión gratis):*** vectores y fotos varias, especialmente útiles para fondos y diseños de patrón.
***2. Redes sociales especializadas***
***• Pinterest:*** crea tableros temáticos (por ejemplo, “poses dinámicas” o “vestuario steampunk”) y guarda contenido que te resuene.
***• ArtStation e DeviantArt:*** revisa portafolios de artistas profesionales; fíjate en sus procesos y tutoriales paso a paso.
***3. Observación directa***
***• Fotografía callejera:*** sal con tu móvil y captura gestos, ropas cotidianas, elementos curiosos de la ciudad.
***• Sketching en vivo:*** lleva tu cuaderno a un café, un parque o tu biblioteca. Dibujar rostros, atuendos y expresiones a mano alzada agudiza tu ojo.
***4. Referencias 3D y software***
***• PureRef:*** organiza y visualiza montones de imágenes en un solo lienzo, sin distracciones.
***• Design Doll o Blender:*** ajusta maniquíes 3D para obtener poses exactas y luego dibuja encima.
A continuación, te comparto algunos consejos para aprovechar al máximo tus referencias
***1. No copies literalmente; interpreta.*** Usa la imagen como punto de partida: cambia la ropa, modifica el ángulo o funde dos poses en una.
***2. Mezcla varias fuentes.*** Combina la pose de una foto, el dramatismo de un cómic y la textura de una tela de otra imagen para crear algo único.
***3. Establece una biblioteca personal.*** Crea carpetas por categorías (poses, rostros, expresiones, fondos) y ve agregando imágenes cada vez que encuentres algo inspirador.
***4. Practica “el boceto rápido”.*** Dedícale cinco minutos a dibujar la postura o el gesto de la referencia; disfruta la libertad de no preocuparte por los detalles.
Y ¿cómo encontrar inspiración en las referencias cuando sientes que ya lo viste todo y te sientes bloqueado?
Incluso los profesionales tienen bloqueos. Estas tácticas me ayudan:
• Desafíos temáticos en redes: únete a retos mensuales (#Inktober, #MerMay, #WorldArtDay) y deja que la consigna te empuje a probar cosas distintas.
• Museos virtuales y recorridos en línea: contempla pinturas clásicas, esculturas o instalaciones contemporáneas; el contraste con tu estilo habitual puede encender ideas nuevas.
• Lectura y cine: observa la forma en que se narran historias, cómo se describen los personajes y entornos. A veces un fragmento de diálogo o el diseño de vestuario de una película te dan el clic que necesitabas.
• Escucha playlists o podcasts creativos: la música o las charlas sobre arte sirven de telón de fondo para que fluya tu imaginación.
Veamos un ejemplo práctico de cómo usar la referencia para llegar a la ilustración final
1. Elige tu fuente: digamos una foto de modelo haciendo estiramientos.
2. Boceto rápido: traza líneas de acción y proporciones en 5 minutos.
3. Afina detalles: ajusta manos, pliegues de la tela y expresión facial.
4. Añade tu sello: cambia la ropa por el atuendo de tu personaje, agrega accesorios y personaliza la paleta de colores.
5. Refina y entinta: consolida líneas y aplica sombras con base en tu luz de referencia.
Con estos pasos, transformarás cualquier imagen en una ilustración que refleje tu estilo y refuerce tu narrativa. Ya no será un calco, sino el punto de partida para crear algo nuevo y auténtico.

Fortunately, it's already feeling better and recovering more each day. So... let's proceed with the content I've prepared for you!
Today, I want to talk about a key topic for all of us who draw comics, manga, or illustrations in general: the importance of references and where to find that spark of creativity that sometimes seems elusive.
Let's start by establishing why references are so valuable?
1. They accelerate your creative process. When you have a visual resource to refer to, you don't waste time trying to invent from scratch a pose, an outfit, or an architectural detail.
2. They improve the quality of your work. Observing photos, sculptures, or illustrations by other artists helps you assimilate proportions, lights, textures, and styles that, with practice, will become part of your visual repertoire.
3. They prevent errors in perspective and anatomy. Having a model - whether human, an object, or an environment - reduces the likelihood that your drawing will look "off" or forced.
Now, let's talk about how to find good starting points in our process.
Below, I share my favorite places (and free!) to search for references:
***1. Free image banks***
***• Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay:*** a variety of photos of people, landscapes, vehicles, and much more.
***• Gratispik (free version):*** vectors and various photos, especially useful for backgrounds and pattern designs.

Next, I'll share some tips to get the most out of your references

• Virtual museums and online tours: contemplate classic paintings, sculptures, or contemporary installations; the contrast with your usual style can spark new ideas.

• Listen to creative playlists or podcasts: music or art talks serve as a backdrop for your imagination to flow.
Let's see a practical example of how to use a reference to get to the final illustration
1. Choose your source: say a photo of a model doing stretches.
2. Quick sketch: draw lines of action and proportions in 5 minutes.
3. Refine details: adjust hands, fabric folds, and facial expression.
4. Add your touch: change the clothes to your character's outfit, add accessories, and personalize the color palette.
5. Refine and ink: consolidate lines and apply shadows based on your reference light.
With these steps, you'll transform any image into an illustration that reflects your style and strengthens your narrative. It will no longer be a copy, but a starting point to create something new and authentic.
