I grew up in a golden era, when the No 10 shirt actually meant something
The one with sauce in his boots and jazz in his brain. The one that immediately i tune into a game i point and ask my dad who's that? Cause they're always the standout players. The kind of player kids will try to imitate their trickery and dribbles. They made you forget your problems for ninety minutes.
Now? E don finish.
Football today is all power,press, strategy and tactics. Everybody must run like mad. No time for vibes. No space for art. They want robots. Athletes. Midfielders doing cardio, not creativity. But what about the one who makes the final pass? The one who sees the opening that nobody else can? Where are they?
I mean just look at what Pep has done to Grealish who was a ball of flair prior to joining City.
Where is our Jay-Jay Okocha? Our Riquelme? Our Özil before Wenger broke him? Even Messi, in his early days, was a No 10 in disguise. He was chaos and poetry. He made defenders dance unwillingly.
Now look around. Who are they grooming? Who are they trusting to wear that shirt? Half of the top teams don’t even use a classic 10 again. They’ve killed the position. Formations now are 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 that really just hides the 10 inside some tactical wahala.
The worst part? Even young talents coming up are being forced into systems. They dribble once, coach shouts. They try a no-look pass, bench straight. Everybody must “track back” and “maintain shape.”
Let me say it with my chest. The No 10 is slowly losing its meaning because football stopped caring about joy. They started caring only about structure. Tactics is gradually suffocating talent.
But we need them back. We need footballers that play like they’re possessed by something divine. We need streets football. We need unpredictability. Because without the No 10, football is just running and sweating with goalposts.
I thank God for the likes of Cole Palmer and Musiala still holding it down.
So if you're a coach out there reading this, I beg, free the number 10s. Let the ballers ball. Football no be just spreadsheet and heatmap. Sometimes, it’s supposed to be spiritual.
And to the next generation of players reading this, don’t let them coach the magic out of you. Be stubborn with your talent. Make us feel something again.
