Yeah, Master System was barely even a thing over here. Nobody in the US was really aware Sega existed until the Genesis dropped, and even then it didn't explode until Sonic. It was a steep uphill battle against Nintendo.

Was the Genesis released shortly after this one? They pumped out quite a few consoles there in the early 90's it seems like. I know there was the Sega Saturn released around that time as well, though the first Sega console I remember hearing about was the Dreamcast, but I'm a 90's kid so yeah, lol.

Yes, and many popular Genesis games were later ported to the Master System with diminished graphics and sound in order to help its sales in markets where it was still relevant. That's why we got so many oddly ambitious *de*makes like Ristar, Tempo, Magic Knight Rayearth and more. Although the other big part of it was the Game Gear was basically a portable Master System, so they could easily release those titles for the GG as well to double the sales.
