It is directly related to their very design. In linux login as root and delete the operating system. It WILL let you! This means it can UPDATE the operating system while the files are still running in main memory (ram). When you reload the system the new files are used, it appears seamless to the user and boot times are not effected.

Windows go try and delete a core file even as the "admin". You can't! The kernel refuses to allow itself to be updated while it is running in main memory on the disc even though it is already copied the current version to main memory to run!

To simplify what I said: When you run a program, it is copied first from the hard drive to main memory (ram) and then executed in main memory. You could have a copy of the software running in main memory and update the file(s) on the hard drive for the future runs of that software. THIS is why all linux, mac, android, etc operating systems are SO much faster and better to use!

Oh wow, thank you for such an easy to understand explanation, it makes perfect sense and definitely on a user level I enjoy working with OSX, *nix and Android OSes. Microsoft tries, I do think they are much better than they were years ago, but yea, perhaps they are in too deep with their kernel that no matter how much they try to change things up and improve, a complete rewrite is not viable at this point.

They COULD fix everything if they listened to me... Simply make Windows like Java, a Virtual Machine Environment that runs EXE programs in a sandbox! Then EXE can run on ANY Operating System, which would allow them to switch to a *nix design. They want issues, insecurity, problems, and crap!

I remember something like Win10 being in news for being able to run bash last time I worked with Windows, so I guess they also are trying to bridge that gap for devs, but yea, I dont wanna speak out of my ass, for work machine I'd personally never pick a Win, rather an OSX or Ubuntu (just as an example, plenty of good distros). I don't hate it with passion, but I also wouldn't pick it.

If I HAVE to use windows for something like Photo Shop I have a Virtual Machine with the state saved disconnected from networking so no updates can ever go through to use. Windows could basically replicate that setup and make their system fast and easy at the kernel level while still running EXE applications.
