I've been in one once, I guess three years ago.</p>\n<p>I used to run on a regular bases and was out of town, visiting someone but didn't want to miss my training. It's always hard to choose a route at a place you don't know so I chose to run along the road. I know it's not the best choice but there was no alternative. </p>\n<p>At one point I had to pass an orchard and all of a sudden a very angry dog was in front of me, barking like crazy. I've learned to distinguish different type of barking, out of necessity and believe me, this was not a warm welcoming baking. I hat two choices. One, to confront him and try to scare him off, showing him I'm bigger and stronger, and two, to back off slowly without turning my back on him. I guess I had two seconds to decide what to do and chose the second option. </p>\n<p>I started to walk backwards very slowly and tried to speak to him very calmly. I was lucky, he didn't attack me, he was just protecting his territory and when I got far enough, he walked away. I'm always running with pulse control and when I looked at my watch, my pulse was at 180 or so. </p>\n<p>It wasn't a pleasant event, I won't wish that for anyone, but managed to get out safe and that's what it matters. </p>","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f3ccsaqkw","appParentAuthor":"tumpa1996","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

| json_metadata | "{"app":"musing/1.1","appTags":["afraid"],"appCategory":"afraid","appTitle":"If you see any animal you are afraid and why are you afraid?","appBody":"<p>Encounters with wild animals can indeed be terrifying, and animals \"<em>smell fear</em>\", so understanding this may help you deal with the situation in a manner which will not result in the animal attacking. </p>\n<p>There are some different things to consider when thinking about this. </p>\n<p>First, how to deal with an encounter. It was taught to me, to maintain eye contact while backing up <em>slowly </em>, until you feel you are a safe distance to turn around and start walking, <strong>do NOT run. </strong>Running will trigger the animals primal instinct to attack. </p>\n<p>I encountered a bob cat from 5 feet away one time, and it was an accidental encounter. I would have never purposely come this close to a wild cat.</p>\n<p>There is absolutely no question in my mind that it was in defensive attack mode. </p>\n<p>We locked eye's, and I did exactly what I was taught, which was to maintain eye contact, and back up slowly, until I was about 20 feet from the animal, and then I slowly turned around and started walking, without looking back. It did not attack. </p>\n<p>Had the animal attacked, I would have tried to kill it. </p>\n<p>If you are under attack by a wild animal, you need to assume it's trying to kill you, and act in accordance with protecting your own life. The underbelly is a good area to focus on if this becomes imminent, and you must act quickly without thinking. Plain and simple. </p>\n<p>In the case with the bob cat, I was afraid to an extent, but I imposed a \"<em>mental will</em>\" if you will, an alpha mindset, that was consistent with \"<em>I mean business</em>\". I'm quite sure animals have a sense for this, and it knew it would have a fight if it attacked me. It might sound strange, but in that moment, I felt a strange connection, or perhaps \"understanding\" would be a better terminology. I don't think the animal wanted to attack, but it felt threatened, as I did. </p>\n<p>Cats aren't going to back down from a fight. Feline animals are killers, and it's very possible that animal would have killed me. But some animals scare me more than others. Obviously wild animals, ferocious and large or dangerous, like snakes, make me panic, but there is a small animal that I can't see or feel coming near me because it makes me afraid. This animal is the CAT.</p>\n<p>I remember that at the age of five I used to play in the gardens of my house with some little friends a game called \"hide and seek\". It was night and the idea was that we would hide and a person would look for us. I remember that I tried to find the most hidden place so that they wouldn't find me and I chose to get into a dark alley behind the house. It was the biggest mistake and tragedy I ever made. While I was looking to bend down and hide in a series of rubble that was there, I saw in the darkness two bright lights and at that very moment a thing that meowed and threw itself towards me! I remember screaming as I felt something scratching my arms. I had my hands on my face and ran away trembling. Obviously at home everyone was frightened to hear me scream and went out to see what was going on. When they saw me with bloody arms, they were scared. I couldn't speak because I was crying but also because I was so scared. When I was able to speak, what I said was: a cat, a cat. my parents went to see what had happened and they realized that among the rubble there was a black, birthing cat.</p>\n<p>From that day on, every time I see a cat, I relive that night when the cat was the one that found me and rushed towards me. </p>","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f3ccsaqkw","appParentAuthor":"tumpa1996","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
