Its too small an amount of money to really do much. If I gave someone $1000 what would you do with it? Not much. Really running a legit project is expensive, $1000 is gonna get you... what ... a server for a few months... lunch?

It's not a matter of being grateful, I'm sure anyone would be thankful to receive even a dollar. I'm just stating it won't accomplish much of anything. Be realistic. Edit: Ill further extend this even. You are asking people "yeah but how would that benefit steem?" It's too small an amount of money to really benefit steem. Just being honest.
