I'm curious.  Why did the site maps that we used to see earlier in the development of the WWW fall into disuse?

Coincidentally, I was just today thinking about how to use argument maps during public events, as a way of containing discussion.

My guess is that site maps got hidden behind layers of abstraction in a misguided effort to more fully control users' experiences.
