Esta iniciativa fue propuesta por mi amigo @huesos y de verdad que me encantó. Es una excelente forma de honrar a mi padre este mes. Tengo que decir primero que hablar de alguien tan cercano es difícil, sin importar cuanto lo intente las palabras se atascan. Tardan en salir, porque lo que uno desea es hacer justicia a lo que siente hacia la persona que ama.

Mi padre, Carlos, es un hombre sencillo y cariñoso; coincide muy bien con su aspecto de gran oso pardo. Recuerdo cuando era niño que cada día se levantaba antes que nadie, tomaba un baño, preparaba el desayuno, y después me despertaba con gentileza para ir al colegio. Íbamos en su carro, casi siempre escuchando las bandas de rock venezolano Desorden Publico o Caramelos de cianuro que a ambos nos encantaban (o a veces algo del grupo de salsa Guaco), me deseaba un buen día al llegar, y al recogerme siempre me abrazaba para luego preguntar cómo había estado mi día. Se ocupaba de que estuviese atento con mis tareas y que supiera que me quería, no importa si fallaba, yo **era su mejor orgullo**.
Lo anterior puede parecer simple, nada interesante, pero es algo que muchos padres olvidan. No importa qué tan cansado, enojado o triste estuviese mí padre, se ocupaba por esos pequeños detalles, por estar ***presente para sus hijos en cada momento***, por insignificante que fuese. Ya que, tristemente, su padre no estuvo presente para él cuando lo necesitaba. Recuerdo jugar futbol alegremente, cuando me regaló mi primera guitarra, cuando me llevaba a prácticas de natación, cuando volábamos volantines (cometas) en el parque o cuando nos sentábamos a ver en un DVD episodio tras episodio del anime de mechas favorito de su infancia. Mazinger Z. Hay tantos momentos y tantas experiencias que me regaló, que no podría contarlas.
Pero creo que hay un recuerdo en especial que está fuertemente marcado en mí, pues ha influido directamente en el rumbo de mi vida, mis sueños y mi personalidad.
### Mi padre y dos libros realmente grandes.
Cuando era niño, no tenía el mismo gusto por la lectura que ahora, fue una acción de mi padre la que despertó el hambre de conocimiento y literatura que ahora domina mi vida.
Entre las preocupaciones más importantes de mi padre con respecto a mí, estaba el estudio. Siempre me motivara, con amor pero con firmeza, a esforzarme en el colegio. Ya que él no pudo terminar la universidad por cuestiones económicas, así que juró que sus hijos no tendrían el mismo problema. Encargándose de trabajar sin descansar, proveer, y asegurarse de que viese el estudio como una oportunidad y no como un lastre. Así que el aprendizaje tuvo vital importancia en mi crecimiento.
Un día mi padre llegó más tarde que de costumbre a casa, me llamó afuera y abrió la maleta de su auto. Había un morral escolar nuevo bastante grande. Me preguntaba qué podría contener, pues era tan pesado que no pude levantarlo. En ese momento no sabía que su contenido iba a cambiar mi vida para siempre.
Eran dos libros. **Dos libros gigantes**, nunca había visto algo así. Eran La Gran Enciclopedia Integral Larousse y el Diccionario Enciclopédico Larousse 2008. Me dijo que eran para mí, un regalo especial. Le di las gracias y nos abrazamos. Recuerdo que nos sentamos a ojearla un rato antes de cenar.

Al principio solo leía las primeras dos partes El Universo y La Tierra y La ciencia y la tecnología, lo que hizo que mi amor por la ciencia e ingeniería despertara, luego pasé a temas de historia, geografía, salud y economía. Admito que la mayor parte del tiempo no entendía, era tanta información y cosas tan complejas para un niño, que era normal que terminara completamente confundido, pero eso solo hacía que mi curiosidad aumentara.
Hasta que un día me dio por curiosear en la última parte, enfocada en el arte y la literatura; ahí fue cuando ocurrió un segundo milagro, pues encontré sinopsis de novelas que me interesaron tanto que me ocupé por memorizar sus nombres por si acaso alguna vez tenía la oportunidad de encontrarlas (En esta lista, se incluye el libro que me cambió la vida, FahrenhEit 451, del que hablo [aqui](https://peakd.com/hive-180164/@gab0nt/esp-eng-contest-the-book-that-changed-my-life-and-the-way-i-think-about-books-concurso-el-libro-que-cambio-mi-vida-y-la-manera)).
En este punto pensarán ¿Qué clase de niño se emociona con tales cosas? Pues, en esa época, yo no tenía ni televisión por cable ni mucho menos internet (Apenas un DVD con el que a veces veía películas o el ya mencionado Mazinger Z) por lo que pasaba mis días estudiando y dibujando. Ahora, estas dos enciclopedias fueron la primera conexión fuerte que tuve con la lectura y con el mundo, porque tras sus páginas pude descubrir cuán grande y compleja es la realidad en la que vivía. Cuando no estudiaba pasaba horas y horas leyendo; y al llegar mi padre a casa, le contaba lo que había aprendido. Él me escuchaba con paciencia e interés, aun cuando no entendiese de qué estaba hablando. *Y recuerdo su sonrisa al escucharme, era una sonrisa orgullosa y tranquila. *
Mi padre fue el causante directo de mis mayores motivaciones y anehelos. Por todo esto le agradezco tanto a mi padre, porque me regaló no dos enciclopedias, sino algo mucho más grande: mi aprecio por el conocimiento y mi amor por la literatura. Porque debido a ello soy lo que soy, alguien que compagina su deseo de trabajar por la ciencia y con el crear historias que toquen las mentes de las personas.

Debido a la crisis que atraviesa Venezuela, no he visto a mi padre en tres años. Se vio obligado a emigrar para ayudar a mantenernos a mí, mi madre y mis dos hermanos menores. Al igual que muchas personas que se han visto separadas de sus seres queridos. Esto me destroza, pues quisiera tenerlo cerca para que vea el hombre en el que intento convertirme.
Por eso, si lees esto, Papá, quiero que sepas que has hecho un buen trabajo; y seré un hombre que te enorgullezca.

I have to say first that talking about someone so close is difficult, no matter how hard you try the words get stuck. They take time to come out, because what you want is to do justice to how you feel about the person you love.

My father, Carlos, is a simple and loving man; he matches his big grizzly bear looks very well .I remember as a child that every day he would get up before anyone else, take a bath, prepare breakfast, and then gently wake me up to go to school. We would go in his car, almost always listening to the Venezuelan Rock bands Desorden Publico, or Caramelos de Cianuro that we both loved (or sometimes something from the salsa band Guaco), he would wish me a good day when I arrived, and when he picked me up he would always hug me and then ask me how my day had been. He made sure I was attentive to my homework and that I knew he loved me, no matter if I failed, I was his best pride.
The above may seem simple, nothing interesting, but it is something many parents forget. No matter how tired, angry or sad my father was, he cared about those little details, ***about being there for his children at every moment***, no matter how insignificant. For, sadly, his father was not there for him when he needed him. I remember playing soccer happily, when he would take me to swimming practice, when he gave me my first guitar, or when we would sit down to watch episode after episode of his childhood favorite mecha anime on DVD. Mazinger Z. There are so many moments and so many experiences he gave me, I couldn't count them all.
But I think there is one memory in particular that is strongly marked in me, because it has directly influenced the course of my life, my dreams and my personality.
### My father and two really big books
When I was a child, I did not have the same taste for reading as I do now, it was an action of my father's that awakened the hunger for knowledge and literature that now dominates my life.
Among my father's most important concerns for me was study. He would always motivate me, lovingly but firmly, to strive in school. Since he could not finish college due to economic issues, he swore that his children would not have the same problem. He took it upon himself to work tirelessly, to provide, and to make sure that I saw studying as an opportunity and not a burden. So learning was vitally important in my growing up.
One day my father came home later than usual, called me outside and opened the trunk of his car. There was a rather large new school bag. I wondered what it could possibly contain, as it was so heavy I couldn't lift it. Little did I know at the time that its contents would change my life forever.
It was two books. Two gigantic books, I had never seen anything like that. They were La Gran Enciclopedia Integral Larousse and the Larousse Encyclopedic Dictionary 2008. He told me they were for me, a special gift. I thanked him and we hugged. I remember we sat down to look through it for a while before dinner.

At first I only read the first two parts The Universe and The Earth and Science and Technology, which sparked my love for science and engineering, then I moved on to history, geography, health and economics. I admit that most of the time I didn't understand, it was so much information and so complex things for a kid, that it was normal that I ended up completely confused, but that only made my curiosity grow.
Until one day I got curious about the last part, focused on art and literature; that's when a second miracle happened, because I found synopses of novels that interested me so much that I took care of memorizing their names in case I ever had the chance to find them (In this list, the book that changed my life, Fahrenhait 451, which I talk about [here](https://peakd.com/hive-180164/@gab0nt/esp-eng-contest-the-book-that-changed-my-life-and-the-way-i-think-about-books-concurso-el-libro-que-cambio-mi-vida-y-la-manera), is included).
At this point you might be thinking, what kind of kid gets excited about such things? Well, at that time, I had neither cable TV nor internet (just a DVD with which I sometimes watched movies or the aforementioned Mazinger Z) so I spent my days studying and drawing. Now, these two encyclopedias were the first strong connection I had with reading and with the world, because behind their pages I could discover how big and complex is the reality in which I lived. When I was not studying I spent hours and hours reading; and when my father came home, I would tell him what I had learned. He would listen to me with patience and interest, even if he didn't understand what I was talking about. And I remember his smile when he listened to me, it was a proud and calm smile.
My father was the direct cause of my greatest motivations and desires. For all this I am so grateful to him, because he gave me not two encyclopedias, but something much greater: my appreciation for knowledge and my love of literature. Because of that I am what I am, someone who combines his desire to work for science with creating stories that touch people's minds.

Due to the crisis in Venezuela, I have not seen my father for three years. He was forced to emigrate to help support me, my mother and my two younger brothers. Just like many people who have been separated from their loved ones. This tears me apart, as I would like to have him around to see the man I am trying to become.
So, if you read this, Dad, I want you to know that you have done a good job; and I will be a man to make you proud.
