A few days ago my good friend Ruben Uzcategui, from the Institute of Culture of my city, invited me to participate in the Second Portuguese Read Book Fair, indicating that I should talk about a book that I liked and would like others to read.
I accepted the invitation and without a moment's hesitation I indicated that I knew which book I wanted to share with them. She told me to think about it and let her know later, but upon noticing my conviction she took notes and was curious as to why this work means a lot to me.
That is why I wanted to make this post, to organize ideas, to share with you, a friend of HIVE that you will not accompany me in person at this event, some points of why I recommend this book.
At the age of 14, in those crisis typical of adolescence, a book came into my hands whose metaphors allowed me to express: what I could not, did not know, and did not dare.
The book "Juan Salvador Gaviota" by Richard Bach was the mirror where I reflected and helped me understand what is related to loneliness, self-affirmation and complexes for feeling that I did not fit in the world, because of my way of understanding the world.
I share with you some of the notes that I extracted in this last rereading, because I try from time to time to approach with innocence to refresh my soul.
1.- I want to be free, I love that feeling of doing what I love, it fills me and with which I do good. For Juan Salvador, freedom was flying, doing stunts and learning new tricks. That gave him fullness, making him feel alive.
2.- I understood that loving, forgiving and serving others is what makes me different, it is my own way of flying, it is my acrobatics. When Juan Salvador tries to fly at the maximum possible speed, I understood that it was a longing of the soul and not an ego of the heart.
3.- You learn to serve better, being better as a person. I understood that like Juan Salvador I had to make an incessant effort to learn, recognizing my limits and accepting my successes.
4.- Leaving the amount for doing good is a reason for exile, breaking vicious and harmful family and friendship circles is a reason for punishment. Each boy exiled in his home, because he does not meet a family standard, is a Juan Salvador who is estranged for violating family traditions.
5.- Pain is normal, suffering is optional. This aspect helped me a lot, years later, in my military service, because I understood that it is not about being well, but about doing good despite the pain that you can carry. Juan Salvador, despite the internal suffering, taught other exiles the knowledge of him, without selfishness, without fear that they would steal or appropriate what he had discovered.
6.- Nothing that is learned and saved is of much use. Juan Salvador always sought to share what he was learning, trying to learn from what he taught.
7.Freedom will always be the greatest prize to which we can aspire. All the existence of Juan Salvador Gaviota was condensed in that word freedom, for him life had no life but there was freedom.
These seven points are the basis of many learnings that I continue to miss, because freedom is not the act of flying, but the internal disposition that I have when doing it, life is not the fact of biological conditions, for me it is the spiritual fact of nurturing myself. valuing that today that is eternal.
