With creative nonfiction, we are looking for stories that are richly told. Consider the idea of sitting down next to the fireside or next to your grandparent, and having them tell tales of their lives. They would share the details that would give you a feeling about what it was like to be in that place and time.
For example, in your story, you could tell us whether you were in front of a large panel of judges in a big room, that seemed like a warehouse. Or perhaps you were on a stage, which had footlights and stage lights, making you feel as though you were someone famous, even for a short while.
Perhaps one of the judges was drinking from a plastic Coke cup. Maybe one kept twirling her hair in her fingers, and you found it distracting.
What were the aromas like? Was there a pizza kitchen nearby, and you could smell the aromas? Or did the audition venue smell like the aromas of other dancers and magicians?
There is so much opportunity in a creative nonfiction story to engage the reader. It is not just an opportunity to spill out your sorry. It is an opportunity to re-create the most important moments of your story through sights and sounds and aromas.
