Il 27 agosto e' ricorso l'anniversario numero 70 della morte di Cesare Pavese. Si suicido' nel 1950, in un alberghetto di Torino con dei sonniferi, vicino alla stazione di Porta Nuova, era destino che la cosa capitasse vicino ad un luogo in cui la gente parte, anche lui avrebbe voluto partire ma un po' per la guerra, molto per altri motivi non ando' quasi mai da nessuna parte.
Sotto il fascismo si fece un periodo di confino a Brancalone Calabro, dopo la guerra, soprattutto dopo il suo suicidio fu accusato di essere stato sempre troppo tiepido col regime, di non essersi mai schierato apertamente malgrado le sue mai nascoste simpatie Comuniste.
Scrisse anche un libro se vogliamo politico; “Il Compagno” che francamente fu una delle sue opere non riuscite benissimo.
Nel suo romanzo La luna e' i falo' ma anche nel Mestiere di vivere si pose il problema dei morti repubblichini e questo gli provoco' molte inimicizie nell'ambito letterario successivo al conflitto mondiale.
L'ho amato da subito, fin da ragazzo, senza riserve.
Certo non mi sono mai riconosciuto nel suo pessimismo, nel suo essere stato un ragazzo imbranato e problematico ma nei suoi romanzi c'era tutto il suo, il mio Piemonte e la piemontesita' che ne consegue.
Un'altra delle accuse che gli furono rivolte anche da personaggi come Pasolini e Moravia fu di provincialismo intellettuale. Non e' forse la cosa che hanno sempre detto di noi piemontesi quella di essere dei provinciali?
Probabilmente il tipico riserbo sabaudo, quella voglia di non fare gli sboroni anche quando potremo permettercelo ha fatto in modo che molta gente confondesse discrezione con timidezza, circospezione con provincialismo.
Pavese e' stato, senza ombra di dubbio, uno dei piu' grandi scrittori del 900', fu anche uno dei pochi che comprese la vera natura del mito americano grazie alla sua passione per i classici d'oltremanica oltre che una buona padronanza della lingua. E' provincialismo questo?
Lo portai all'orale alla maturita' e se non sbaglio allo scritto scelsi di commentare un suo libro, credo proprio La Luna e' i falo'.
Era cosi' piemontese che nel biglietto che lascio' sul comodino prima di suicidarsi scrisse: “Mi raccomando, non fate pettegolezzi”.

August 27th marked the 70th anniversary of Cesare Pavese's death. He committed suicide in 1950, in a small hotel in Turin with sleeping pills, near the Porta Nuova station, it was destined that it would happen near a place where people leave, he too would have wanted to leave but partly for the war , for many other reasons he almost never went anywhere. Under fascism there was a period of confinement in Brancalone Calabro, after the war, especially after his suicide he was accused of having always been too lukewarm towards the regime, of never having openly taken sides despite his never hidden Communist sympathies. In his novel The Moon and the Bonfires but also in The Profession of Living the problem of the republican deaths arose and this provoked him
many enmities in the literary sphere following the world war. I loved him immediately, since I was a boy, without reservations. Of course I never recognized myself in his pessimism, in his having been a clumsy and problematic boy but in his novels there was everything about him, my Piedmont and the Piedmonteseness that follows from it. Another of the accusations leveled against him by figures such as Pasolini and Moravia was intellectual provincialism. Isn't that what they have always said about us Piedmontese that we are provincial? Probably the typical Savoy reserve, that desire not to make a fuss even when we can afford it, has caused many people to confuse discretion with shyness, circumspection with provincialism. Pavese was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, he was also one of the few who understood the true nature of the American myth thanks to his passion for the classics from across the Channel as well as a good command of the language. Is this provincialism? I took him to the oral exam in high school and if I'm not mistaken in the written exam I chose to comment on a book by him, I think it's La Luna e 'il bonfires'. He was so Piedmontese that in the note he left on the bedside table before committing suicide he wrote "Please don't gossip"." |
