Summary
Kirby’s at the police arguing with the sketch artist about what Harper looks like. Harper wakes up at the hospital, strapped to the bed, stitches on his face from where Kirby cut him. He asks a fellow patient how long he’s been there, says it’s been too long, doesn’t want to end up like Leo, and leaves to stumble back to the house—Kirby’s house from episode one when she was a kid and Harper gave her the Pegasus doll. Kirby doesn’t say hello to Marcus or her Mom and goes straight to work where her boss finds out she tampered with evidence from the night Harper attacked her—resulting in Dan questioning her reliability when he reveals the bar Harper attacked her in was never a laundromat, meaning her encounter with Harper changed the timeline again but only slightly. Harper goes to the hospice and talks to Leo, another man who knows about the house and wants to go back but Harper won’t let him. Harper travels back to Kirby’s second talk with Jinny at Jinny’s place, changing Kirby’s hair from long to shorter than before. Jinny asks security at work to show her key activity, revealing the spare she lost has been following her. Kirby and Dan go to a hospice that Julia visited and the reception recognizes Kirby from the newspaper that printed during Harper’s attack at the bar, and recognizes his face from a sketch Kirby brings. The receptionists takes them to see the man who Harper visits, Leo. He has mental problems and is afraid of Harper. Due to his memory problems, Kirby tricks him into mentioning the house and getting something he stole from Harper—a video of him talking to a blonde young woman. Harper travels back to the night he left Jinny an umbrella before it rained, resulting in Kirby seeing that Dan’s car has changed. This time instead of dismissing her, Dan asks Kirby what his car looked like last time. She describes his ex-wife’s car which he sold years ago. Harper tells Jinny him and Kirby are connected, realizing his travels result in changes only they can notice. He tells Jinny he’s not going to kill her yet and leaves.
Review
Last episode was quite a doozy -- Harper attacks Kirby at the laundromat/bar where he got the matches he left inside her body when he attacked in 1986. He slams her against a wall and it changes multiples times, confusing him. His forays into the past, change the time period Kirby inhabits but it seems Kirby might have similar or related supernatural time-effects of her own.
I was a bit worried when Kirby and the sketch artist were arguing in the beginning of the episode but you got to hand it to the guy, the finished product was spot-on and looked exactly like Harper.
The reveal that Harper can't be away from the house he gave child Kirby the pegasus toy is an interesting development. Now we know that his time-travel abilities are not innate but related to a specific place ... potentially. He reminded me of a diver desperately trying to surface for air. Perhaps being in a non-native time period is hazardous for travelers like himself. Did too much time away damage his friend Leo's brain? The introduction of that character was another awesome reveal that shows Harper's not really alone -- and that his friend may not really understand what Harper's been doing. When the two discuss Kirby's connection to the house, Harper speaks of her like a dating prospect and not the much darker truth of her as a survivor of his violent and most-often fatal attacks.
Dan questioning Kirby's integrity felt very poetic -- he doubts his own and even though he knows it's wrong he doesn't back her up when their boss questions her. Not that the boss was in the wrong, they're journalists, a professional newspaper, and Kirby let emotion take over and tampered with evidence -- although it was her own.
I loved how they showed Harper traveling back in time to Kirby and Jinny's second meeting at Jinny's place. It drove me crazy that Jinny couldn't sense someone behind so close by, which felt both unrealistic but also scary. He truly invades his victims personal spaces and appears as an unassuming boogeyman. I liked how his visitation results in Kirby's hair changing to remind us that his travels affect her and change the timeline ever so slightly or drastically.
It's rather perplexing that Harper hasn't figured out a way to get rid of Kirby or Dan, especially since he can just kill them as babies which is a super dark solution but effective if his continued anonymous survival is his goal.
What is Harper's end goal?
Hopefully find out next time on the next episode of Shining Girls!
