**The Background**
My wife and I have always wanted a homestead in the country. Although, I have pared down the requirements from seven to ten acres to a maybe a more manageable acre or so. We thought we had found the place of our dreams (a little less than an acre) on a country road and made a verbal agreement to rent to own for five years. In hindsight that was a mistake because without something in writing, the final sale price kept going up in discussions. Not to mention the requirement we keep a bedroom open for them (they are old friends) for when they came up to visit the area from their new home in North Carolina. At one point she had us take in a “stray”. So in the second summer we were there I decided to move us into the village. My wife’s brother had an apartment open up in the building he owned and we moved. We have been here for six years.
**Running the Homestead**
The plan is a permaculture based homestead. Chickens for eggs and the manure. Rabbits for meat and manure. I might want to have a goat or two for milk and cheese, although my wife said she would prefer sheep which you could also use for milk and cheese. If space permits, chickens for meat.
The garden would be the plants we need in our cooking. There isn’t any desire to raise anything for sale except for any excess we produce. The goal is to have the homestead be as self sustaining as possible.
**The Search**
We are doing a soft search here in upstate New York. Mostly the Schoharie valley and west along the Mohawk River in our own little slice of Amish country.
Recently friends of ours who live in Ohio near the West Virginia border have been sending us listings for small properties in their area.
The goal is up to two acres with a house and water and septic (or sewer if a municipality). We feel we can handle buying a home that might require some repairs - we are handy and have done small jobs at various places we lived ourselves.
**Documenting it All**
Over the years when we have watched YouTube videos about homesteading there doesn’t seem to be any videos from older (we are 65 or soon to be) folks just starting out. It seems they are all young or early middle aged. There doesn’t seem to be folks starting out with little to no money, they either had homes or businesses they sold to get the homesteading property, or they got the property from relatives. Nothing bad about that, I often wish our parents had the foresight to buy country property or that our own journey involved owning a home we could now sell to buy country property.
So another goal will be to document the process here on the blog and through video. How a couple of folks in their sixties go about acquiring and running a homestead. I hope you all will come with us on the journey.
