## Orchids Are A Family Passion ..
We could call this an addiction or a passion. I think there is a fine line that separates the two. For now I feel as if we can stop anytime we want to, I think. All joking aside, it really has become sort of a fun hobby for my wife and I, who have little to no knowledge about Orchids. These store bought, everyday run of the mill Orchids, have been relatively easy to maintain. I’ve touched on this subject many times in previous posts, and some of you may well be tired of reading about it.

## A Different Story ..
Today I want to share a short post, with a slightly different angle to it. In the past, I wrote about this Orchid and that Orchid. They were Orchids that I purchased and brought home. The subject of my writing today, is not one in which I purchased, but rather the first Orchid gifted to us. A pair of close friends, who are aware of our recently discovered passion for Orchids, sent us this one in sympathy of Pepper’s passing. It was a truly unique and meaningful gift, and Pepper would have loved it!
## The Passion Is Addictive ..
Our passion for the plant extended to a furry member of our family, Pepper. His interest in the plants, although I have sort of glorified it over the past months, was a good mixture of curiosity and selfishness. He was always super interested in anything that came through the door in which we were holding in our hands. He was immediately thinking that this could be edible and serve my taste buds and belly well. This is/was partly my fault. You see, I have this problem. Whenever I am out, and most of the time that includes eating out, I tend to bring home small morsels of food to give my fur babies. What can I say, I enjoy doing it. Well it appears that I sort of nurtured this curiosity.

I would bring home the plants, and right away Pepper would see I was carrying something. I would place it onto the floor so he could have a better look at it. He would sniff it up and down; inspecting every square inch of it, until he was certain it could not be eaten or played with. It was so cute too. I would be talking to him and smiling so big, all the while taking photo’s for me and for the blog. I really, really, really will miss this connection we had over the Orchids.
## An Anticlimactic Entrance ..
On the Monday morning following Peppers passing, I heard our front door bell ring. As I approached the front entrance, I could make out the silhouette of a tall man with arms folded tightly in front of his chest. He had taken several steps backward before I had even approached the threshold. I opened the door and there was a brief exchange of hellos, a thank you and smiles, as I bent over to pick up what he left sitting on the porch, a beautiful and quite tall, white and pink Orchid.
I was overwhelmed with joy and sadness all at once. I don’t know how many of you have ever experienced such an emotional event, but it is a strange feeling. I started to tear up as I moved back toward the kitchen area with the plant. All I wanted to do was show my buddy what came to the house for him.
The air was filled with an awkward silence. There was no pitter-patter of paws, sliding along the tile floor. I wasn’t greeted by a dog standing on two hind legs, in hopes to catch an early glimpse of the beauty in my hands. The only sound I heard was the engine of the van, as the delivery driver sped off to his next stop. The only comfort I found was in the sympathetic meaning behind the gift; a beautiful, thoughtful, heartwarming gift. But still, there was no Pepper.
## The Orchid ..
After the initial emotional battle and the tears dried, I fell head over heels for our new Orchid. Our friends really know us quite well. This gift was one they knew we would appreciate, and it had meaning. It meant more to us than just being a plant that was received during our time of grief. I’m always going to have a little special connection to this one; after all, it symbolizes the passing of a good friend and companion. I had better not kill this one.. hehe.. I thought I had better put a little humor in all of this sappy stuff.
![IMG_2959.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/bdmillergallery/8R9LWpd9-IMG_2959.JPG)
The Orchid plant is on the larger size, as compared to the rest of the plants in our collection, but not that much bigger. The bloom stem on the other hand is quite tall. It’s roughly 2.5 feet tall, which towers over all the other blooms we have had to this point. The stem is loaded with large, primarily white flowers. There is over a dozen of them neatly placed along the stems.
![IMG_2960.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/bdmillergallery/mZ4JW5Lh-IMG_2960.JPG)
In the center of each flower is the most brilliant of pink color. It's just enough color to draw the eye to the center and to make each flower pop!
![IMG_2961.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/bdmillergallery/BD2k56H8-IMG_2961.JPG)
![IMG_2969.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/bdmillergallery/9FeCcZSd-IMG_2969.JPG)
On the back side of the petals, the surface appears light pink. This is the first I have ever noticed the back side of the flowers, and never really think to examine that portion. From now on I think I'll take a closer look at these plants and their flowers.
![IMG_2970.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/bdmillergallery/W1bhR92N-IMG_2970.JPG)
The Orchid arrived in a really cool looking square, glass vase filled with smooth little stones. The stones look almost glossy, like they were tumbled smooth.

![IMG_2968.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/bdmillergallery/8ktI3YyS-IMG_2968.JPG)
I see a small pot buried under all of that stone. Eventually I may have to remove the plant from this vase of stones, but for now it is just too beautiful to mess with.
![IMG_2967.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/bdmillergallery/xvI9HUJO-IMG_2967.JPG)
The weight of the stones probably helps to keep the plant from toppling over. Given how tall the stem rises into the air, one would think it may be a bit too heavy for the small pot it’s planted into.

## In Memory Of Pepper ..
In memory of our little Pepper boy, I placed his ashes next to the base of the Orchid, where I knew he would have been as soon as I would have set it onto the floor. Although this made me cry, I felt better afterward, as though he really did enjoy the moment in spirit. It was one of those brief moments of healing that needed to occur.

#### I will always have fond memories of Pepper and his infatuation with Orchids and houseplants. This particular Orchid will always remind me of his passing, and that's not such a bad thing. Not to remember his passing would be a travesty to his life. He lived a wonderful life with lots of little surprises mixed in. Surprises such as Orchids. Today I am smiling when I think of these memories and my dear friend Pepper.

### “Do not go to my grave.
Mary knows, I am not there.
Look for me in between pages
and on people’s lips.
Do not go to my old school.
Do not go to my old house —
I am not in any of those places.
Look for me in your hearts
and greet me there..."

## About Me ~ The Artist
My art work incorporates a wide variety of subject matter, including landscape, seascape, cityscape, and still life images. My works are the product of a continuing process of exploration through which I seek to portray personal and visionary interpretations of my surroundings. My paintings are impressions of places and events from everyday life, an interpretation of my imagination, and personal responses to what I see and feel on a daily basis. More recently I have invested generous amounts of time into my landscape painting. I am surrounded by natural and man made beauty, which inherently presents itself in the tri-state area, and almost demands that I paint it.
Not everything is art. Art is not everything, but it comes close. Art is everywhere and all the time. Art makes you experience the beauty of the world, the people in it, and the places we call home. Art itself is so influential that it can tell stories, show feelings, and express passion or fury. Art exists in addition to language; expression of sensations and thoughts, revealing a way of thinking too subtle and delicate for words.
For me art requires love, honesty and perseverance. In return, it reveals some personal, non-analyzable, and creative untamed passion. For the public, art with its magnificent beauty, improves mood and health and builds better human beings and communities. It engages the intellect, softens the heart, strengthens the soul and frees the spirit.
