<div class="text-justify"> <center></center> <center>*It is possible to provide security against other ills, but as far as death is concerned, we men live in a city without walls.*</center> <center>**- Epicurus -**</center> *** *** In this world where we've *"never been more connected,"* [which I call bullshit on because I think we've never been more emotionally disconnected], and where almost everything we do and much of our information is tracked, linked, auto-filled and generally accessible to just about anyone with a computer, I think it's important to put some thought into the security of one's personal information and cyber-security in general. With that in mind, I ask the question...*Out of ten, with ten being strong and one being ineffectual, where does your cyber-security integrity rate?* #### Obfuscate I recently read a post by @smithlabs about encrypted emails, tracking and data-mining and general personal cyber-security issues that we all face which you can find ***<a href="https://peakd.com/hive-110786/@smithlabs/everyone-should-have-an-encrypted-email-this-is-my-choice">here</a>***. If you're at all interested in maintaining a level of security it's worth a read. It's not long, but may spark some action on your part, or just open up the thought process and *that may lead to action.* Toby mentions an encrypted email provider, one I also use, called *Proton Mail*. I'll not go into it here as you can do your own investigations. He also mentions his desire to *obfuscate his data*, which simply means to make the data appear *confused, jumbled or unclear* to anyone who looks...This serves, hopefully, to discombobulate those searching with the intention to gather intelligence from it for whatever, usually nefarious, reason. I don't mean your neighbour here, I'm talking about Google and Meta and other such corporations who profit from your information; governments too. Email services like Proton Mail seek to assist a person to obfuscate their information and, that seems a good idea to me. It's worth doing some research on the matter. Toby has removed apps from his phone also which is something I've not delved into that deeply myself, but I'm getting there. I know that cyber-security is an issue though and only recently a friend was viciously cyber-attacked, the result of which was the loss of virtually all digital information and the pain of a lot of personal real-world heartache that still endures. Is it unavoidable? Probably not, but the risk of it can be mitigated. So no, I'm not at *no-apps-on-phone* ninja-level like Toby but I certainly put some effort into maintaining an increased level of electronic security; and also personal security as well of course. #### Threema communication With this in mind, a couple years ago, I began to use a messaging app called *Threema* which I've found to be very good. I haven't linked to it, but again, you can do your own research and see for yourself. It's not free, but that's ok, sometimes a few dollars to secure one's privacy is worth it. Right? It's basically an end-to-end encrypted messaging service and does video and phone calls also. The cool thing is that a user doesn't need to disclose their phone number or email to get it, although that's an option for verification which I have taken up. To link up with other users no phone numbers or emails are required at all though. This means I could put my Threema ID code here in this post and people could request to be added to my contact list and converse with me like any other messaging app all without knowing where I am, my phone number or email address, or even my real name; also, I'd not know theirs either. It's pretty secure. There's many other benefits too. The Threema ID looks like this: NNPY4RCC, although that's not actually my own ID of course. Connection can also be done by QR code. Anyway, I'm not here to sell Threema to you. If you're keen, find the website and take a look or download it to your phone from the Play Store or App Store and go from there. Just remember, it's about $8AUD to get and that means so many people will not want to jump on board so you might find yourself short of friends unless you have switched on and security-conscious friends. I guess some people feel their personal data and security is worth less than eight bucks...which confounds me. *** There are so many apps available, most of which probably have some alternate purpose like data-gathering and tracking, but there's a few around that can be extremely useful and I think Threema is one such app, as is the Proton Mail option that Toby and I use. Do you know of any that are particularly useful, well designed and have functional-integrity but are also secure and actively protect your data? Definitely a good thing to keep in mind dude. I know that I've gotten better over time but I've had this security conscious mind for a while, albeit it is like anything, it grows as our experiences go on. I've had things happen at work for example, where we had a largescale cyber event that absolutely caused me some pause to think of my personal situations with these things. I will check out his post and see what it's got in there. I am always trying to increase my security. One thing I haven't done or gotten into yet are the VPN's. I know it's a good idea but I guess it's one of those things where we are a little on the lazy side and don't do something we know is good for us but until we are pushed to it, we don't do it. I need to get over that hump!

The VPN is a good idea, I run one all the time and do what Toby does, change the country. It keeps them guessing I suppose. Also, I don't have a Facebook and all, that certainly helps. I think it's about having an awareness of it, mitigating the risk in the ways were able, rather than stressing about it.

Surf Shark VPN is cool too. We had to use apps like this when we got banned from Twitter as a country. A country still battling with security issues and can't find a way to deal with it...but it can place a ban on social media within the country, and can find and kill citizens in the name of hate speech...

Hi Galen These days I think so many of these "we look so innocent" apps that people use are mostly in it for the mining rights. How many people actually read the terms and conditions when they click install? I'm even guilty of not doing it and who knows what is actually in the fine print. I think another problem is that so many of these apps and 'services' don't even write it in a way that makes sense to the average Joe. I am going to sign up to Proton mail today, anything that can get me one step further away from Google I think is a smart move. I hate that all of these things are now so interconnected because if one of them gets compromised, then everything linked can be compromised too and hacks happen every day. People that say they don't are bonkers. It's even more important to keep your security tight when dealing with crypto because the last thing you want is someone gaining access to that. In a way I think that sometimes we who got into crypto early are still lucky because the general populace are still sleeping which lowers the threat somewhat but I'm sure that there will be more and more reports of crypto exchanges being hit as time goes on. Sorry for the long comment, but your post was really good and got me asking some important questions. Thanks for putting it together.

One thing I recommend for Proton mail is write down your password somewhere! :D If you lose it you can reset it however you completely lose access to old emails! I learned that the hard way lol. It's encrypted so if you change the password any messages you sent and received prior to the password change are garbled. You can still get to them if you can somehow figure out the old password.

I tend to do that anyway, I keep hard copies of my passwords because I don't entirely trust password managers, they are fallible too. Good point for me to know about losing the data, I suppose it is a dual sided coin. Ultimately it's up to you to keep your password safe - if you can't regain access to it at least you know that nobody else has access either.

I think you'll like Proton Mail and certainly the feeling of security it gives. There's a free version but I pay for it as I take it a little more seriously I guess. The free version works though. I can't fault your comment, you say it well and I agree. I think it's difficult to maintain a good level of security, but required and, of course, there needs to be some balance as we still need to function in this digital world, but some caution is required and the smart people are applying it.

It is difficult to find the balance because you simply can't be entirely off line these days, it just isn't possible but there are some things that can help you to stay off the radar and a secure email is one of them. I can't understand why you can use Google to sign into so many of these apps, too much linking going on.

I'm sure my security is full of holes, but it is not because I don't care. I do what I know how and understand there is so much I don't know that I could probably do. In general I don't download apps on my phone with one or two exceptions. I don't really need them there. I still have a PC and I prefer using it when I am at home, because I like a full keyboard. When I sign on to fun places, I never put my real info, but that also causes me to have a manual rolodex where I keep passwords and the info I used for those sites. I mean, if I ever need to recover, I need to know what I said when I started there. LOL ! It would be good if there were such a thing as total security, but I'm not sure there is. Wonder if someone has invented a foil bag that is soft inside to put phones in when you are on the move. That thought came to me while reading, although I don't go anywhere secret or important, I still wondered if it existed. I know I can goog it, but I haven't yet. Now I'm going to go put an extra layer of foil on my foil hat.... just in case. 😄

I try to tweak my security as I learn new things. There are just SO many holes in it these days it seems. As soon as you think you might be good, someone comes up with another way in. We have really connected with each other, even with people we don't know. There is no certainty whether those on the other end are really people or robots who always say hi every morning to you. It's inevitable not to be connected to each other. The problem is that as you mentioned, personal data and security are at stake. You have locked your house with a big padlock. But there is always a gap for those with bad intentions. Usually they steal it in storage, even while you're making it. I always destroy some very important data after using it. at least it will make me relieved and can sleep well. I intend to scramble all my save data, but that only delays them from getting it, don't stop them. This post of yours, makes someone have an alternative choice. To do what, how and where to protect personal data. I'll give it a try, 8 USD is nothing compared to regret at some point.

It's good to be security conscious although I'm afraid there's only so much we can do to mitigate the risks somewhat, I don't think we can do so totally, unless we don't go online and these days that's not really possible I guess. With Theeema, don't just rush out and get it mate, do your due diligence. If no one else you know, and want to talk with, has it there's no point. Maybe you could start the trend in your friends group though huh?

I've been thinking a lot about "properly" securing my data as well, taking it up a notch. Just recently a friend's e-mail got hacked, and by the time he got to know about it, he was already being blackmailed for some inside information that the hacker got access to, and in return the hacker asked for a $1000 dollars. My friend managed to solve some of the issues on that, without a paying a dime of course, but it's still quite concerning.

Like your post! Proton mail also offers a free VPN, which I use whenever I need to open an app (didn't get rid of all of them), so I can place myself overseas. Different country every time of course, LOL! I tried to put cash iny Sisters credit union a few weeks ago, and they wanted my picture I.D. and SS number. I told them to pound sand, because their security stinks! Then the fun part happened, he tried to look me up on the web...and got Nothing! That actually shook him up.... But sometimes, when I'm in the mood, I sign in on websites and give them bad data. I usually use city hall or the police dept for a home address, for spice. I'm 21 to 97, male and female, and I've been born in every state in the union. They have to treat primary data input as valid, so they can't ignore any of it! Sure poisons a database.... All apps will record the phone location and the IMEI number, so use them sparingly; but right now they believe I'm a World traveler! I'm still looking at the Unix based phones, but it's not reliable enough yet. I'd spend the $800 in a heartbeat if they got the bugs worked out! Keep stirring the datapot! Can't foul that database too much.... I posted on the Carcano Rifle about an hour ago, wasn't sure if it had too much politics even though the politics are over 50 years old. 👍💙🤠💗🙏🤕😳

Hi Toby. That is brilliant, what a great idea to throw them off course. I need to start doing that so that they get confused. I hate that everything asks for your date of birth, I don't think that should be anyone's business especially if it is linked by government to your identification criteria. It's also very rude to ask a lady's age, don't they know that? I love the fact that they guy couldn't find anything on you, that's the way it should be if that's what you want. What so many people don't understand is that all of this information that you provide creates a profile and they sell that to the highest bidder. Not to mention that when you cover the receiver of your phone it tells you not to or when you cover the camera it stops working...gee why would they do that I wonder? Everything is tracking us. I try to turn my location on apps on my phone off and I deny them access. Also things like Google maps - why exactly would they need access to manage your phone calls. It all stinks to me to be honest and leaves me with an uneasy feeling. I like that proton mail offers a VPN. I'm definitely going to sign up for an account with them. Good security may not be free, but there's a lot that you can do to get as far off their radar as possible.

I know it's not fool proof but I keep the GPS off on my phone 99.9% of the time unless I need to use a map to get somewhere. I as well nowadays fool around with my DOB when I sign up for things. I used to put it correctly which is dismaying however we can't change some things of the past so it's good to mess it up for the future.

Your advantage is that you can enter garbage, and they have to assume it's correct! That really lets you screw around with their database, and they have to help. The free VPN with proton mail is helpful too...you can go anywhere in the World, with a single click! The 64 but encryption will make the alphabet soup bureaucracy Work for any data they want. I'm Sure they Hate it, which makes me smile! I wear a belt holster for my phone, so the camera is blocked most of the time. I use Bluetooth, so the mic is bypassed too, The Unix phone has switches on camera, mic, and location; that interrupts power to that subsystem. IT still needs work, but it's getting better! 👍🤠🤕😳💵💗🙏😋

I think *they* get at us in every way possible. It's almost impossible to do anything with a government department without going online and using apps like MyGov. They have Medicare and tax linked to it, vehicle registration and individual's licensing and for disabled, retirees or those on pensions it can't be done any other way. It sucks. There's other elements to it as well, but you get my point; having a zero digital footprint is a thing of the past I think. I like to think things are pretty secure for me, but yeah, I have a phone and so they know pretty much everything they need to know, including where I am. I have started turning my personal phone off a lot, I don't care if I miss calls and texts, those who know me and I want to respond to, will wait. I leave it home a lot also, I just don't need to be that connected to everything you know? I think I'd be a lot more conscious of it and play games as you're doing if I had more time in my day but I struggle to get things done so have to just push on with it I guess. Thanks for commenting. No problem, but if you turn off the phone or the GPS, wrap the device in foil, because they can remote activate it. Not trying to sound paranoid, but it's in the trade magazines. I can design using chip sets that include this function, if my soul was sold to the dark side! Not even that hard, sad to say.... 😭🤮💩🤢👎🤬👹

Till now I have mostly used Telegram, as they claim they have one of the most sophisticated encryption system. And also, they are open-source. In the open source messenger list, signal is the most highly rated. As their code is thoroughly checked for backdoors. Any of those two messengers combined along with proton is a good combination. Other than that, we still leave behind a digital footprint that the data miners follow. I guess their is no way around that. My score would be 6 or 7 I suppose. To get it up a notch, Id need to discard closed source operating systems all together and start using Linux or Ubuntu. I'm familiar with the UI, its just that windows offers more usability unfortunately. Open-source operating systems don't offer most of the apps I use on a daily basis. Oh also, I have a portable one TB bad boy from Sandisk which I have made bootable with ubuntu 22.04, And encrypted it. Its vey secure. If you want to protect your data even more, this is the way to go.
