## I haven't been out and about much since covid to find neat things to photograph to use for my posts, so I was going back through the photos I have, to see what was there that I never shared before. ## Our little town has one of the historic confederate statues in front of the old courthouse that the haters have been destroying of late. I know that sentence may sound a bit abrasive, but let me tell you about me and that.... ## I was born and raised in the south, but I consider myself one of the lucky ones in that my parents didn't raise me to hate others for no real reason at all and we weren't taught that we were better than anyone else simply because we were white, so that is something I never had to overcome as an adult. I was born with a mushy heart and an over-sized empathizer and I would never intentionally hurt someone else's feelings on purpose.....no ones.  ## (I realized once I started adding my photos that I didn't have a good one of the front of the court house, even though I thought I did, but I found this photo I had taken from my car one night in December, obviously. Merry Christmas ! ha ha) ## It sits in the center of a circle drive. and has roads leading too (or away) north, south, east & west.  ## I had taken some photos one day of the old courthouse that was built in 1923 to replace the original one that had been built in 1861 of brick and stucco. ## Being close to it really made me feel small. It is SO magnificent.  ## ...HUGE !  ## ..... and beautiful !  ## Nothing much they build today has near the personality.  ## The pole that was going through one of the photos above is for this flag.  ## I really love the lamp post too. It may look short compared to the courthouse, but they are still very big.  ## So back to the statue. This one is not of a general or leader, just a miscellaneous confederate soldier. For me, I never looked at it specifically as representing being against something or someone now, more just an icon of history past. It IS history you know, something in the past and we all know that there is a lot of history that is not pretty. It's still history. ## It in no way means our city is still trying to fight that war. ## I believe a lot of people fought because they felt attacked and they didn't know another way of life and that there was a lot of ignorance involved as many had been raised and taught by their parents things that weren't true (just like their parents taught them). How much did you believe that your parents taught you growing up..... and what portion of that do you still believe? As an adult, did you find things that weren't quite like you were taught and as an adult, did you let that go and make your own opinion? ## It's definitely a process.  ## You would think from the headlines that America has not made any progress since slavery was abolished, but let me tell you something else, we as a country have made great strides. The headlines don't come close to conveying the truth I see. I live around and work with a very diverse group of people and most of us, of every race, are doing the right thing by each other. We ARE being the solution. We are making it a better day all around. ## I'm proud of that and I believe it is going on like this in much more of the country than not. I know there are hot spots of badness and well..... when in all of the history of the earth has there ever been a place where everything was good and done right all of the time..... ?? ## I don't know of any. ## I hope everyone is doing well and having a happy weekend. ## ... and remember, choose to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. I understand that there will always be haters, people that look for something wrong or bad in everything they lay their eyes on. As much havoc and sadness as they cause, I almost want to feel sorry for them for a moment.... for their lives, because the inside of a person like that simply cannot be happy. Well, Jacey. I'm just a back ass country boy who's great great grandfather left Vuhginia (we still know how to pronounce it in our family :) ) and moved his family to Chicago so he could fight for the Union. 110th Illinois. I don't feel as strongly about your statue as I do about some. I admire Bobby Lee as a general and really admire what he did after the war but... He knowingly resigned his commission in the Army to join the South. As such, he should not be venerated in a United States. The common soldiers did what common soldiers have done since civilization was started. Fought as ordered. My problem is that most of the statues were not put up until so much later and they were really put in place to enforce the Jim Crow which legalized hating for skin color. In my opinion Jim Crow was a much larger crime than the Civil War. I don't think that the statues, any of the statues ought to be destroyed. I think they should be moved to museums where they can be part of history without being a public reminder of some pretty foul times for our nation. Thank you. Hi Tom, Like nearly everything else in history (and other things), there are always many points of view. Somewhere along the line, many details get lost and huge generalizations are left that sometimes skew what appears to be accepted as basic truths, but you will never get the masses to sit still long enough to listen to it all so..... we go forward the best way we can. If a change can be made without resorting to violence and destruction and in this case I believe it can, then civilized people would choose a different path to pursue those changes. The violence and destruction only manages to create a bigger divide, even if it is mostly silent. As you know, I was raised even farther south than you. and I too, grew up with and around many black folks, we didn't have many Mexican, Hindu or Asian folks 55 yrs ago. My parents also did not teach me to hate anyone, nor especially to treat anyone badly simply because they were not white. I have a meme somewhere, looked for it quickly but didn't find it, it essentially is a image of two people on other sides of a fence, talking. The caption reads "Turn off the TV, get off social media and TALK to your neighbors, You'll find that our world, our country isn't nearly as bad a place as the media and politicians want you to believe it is. I've got some great images from cemeteries around here @jacey.boldart I made a post of then a couple of years ago, so I'd get in trouble if I posted that one again, but I might sneak in some images in a new post.

I know what you are saying and really..... you would think from the headlines that we are all at each other's throats all the time. It simply isn't true ! I see lots of folks using photos they've used before, but have included them in different types of posts and for different reasons and I've never seen anyone give them grief for it. If you don't just copy and paste the old post, but use some of the photos with different wording, I don't see what the harm is. Who on earth remembers what I posted in the first few months I started??? Nobody I'm thinking.

Well apparently Hive Watchers does, when I started on Steemit I had over 1400 original writings, mostly poetic and inspirational. When I first started, it was such a blessing to be able to include the **bold** and _italic_ _**and both**_ in my texts, and to be able to center, and include more than one image etc... things that I got better at as time went on. So I would repost the same writing, reformatted and often with new images. After about 2 months on Hive, I began to get warnings and downvotes from them. I was like you; many if not most of the people here now will have never seen my works, and IF they should go back to previous posts, they could not upvote (that was the _**MAJOR**_ stated reason; reposting was "Double Dipping" into the "reward pool") So a whole lot of people are missing out on a whole lot of very good and uplifting writings. Thanks to HiveWatchers and a few others. I was banned from posting to TheInkWell for reposting
