<div class="text-justify"> We were discussing change behaviors with a colleague today, and if change is forced, it rarely leads to faster adoption, because it will face a lot of change resistance. However, if steps are developed by those who are going to be making the changes and then enabled in pieces, the implementation not only goes more smoothly and quickly, it is also better supported. Behavioral change is what is needed, but the fact is, that no individuals want to be the one who has to make the change themselves, even though they might want to get the results of the change. And, if there is a shortcut, they are going to take it, even if it comes with other limitations - like drugs used for weight-loss. In general, we are short-term thinkers and actors by nature, because until quite recently in our history as a species, we haven't really been able to save much. We would hunt and gather and have to eat it within a short time frame and the tools we had, were not of the standard that could necessarily be passed down through the generations. As language developed, we started sharing our information that led to practical behaviors, like improving our hunting prowess. It is only in the last few thousand years since the farming revolution took hold, that we started storing food for the future in any large quantities, which meant that we are then able to survive conditions, that were previously unsurvivable - like harsh winters. This means that for only a relatively short time of our evolution, we have been able to plan for the future, without the only plan being to move somewhere else. >We aren't savers by nature, we are spenders. Yet, in a world of global economics and trade, success is defined by the ability to use resources well, which means having them available when they can make the most impact on our experience. For instance, in order to buy the dips, a trader has to have something with which to buy, and if they haven't prepared, the dip will come and they can not take a position in it. They need to learn how to hold capital energy, so they are able to spend capital energy when it is most advantageous to do so. But, the culture of instant gratification plays into our lizard brain, caveman mentality - where it is a *spend now* process that gives a dopamine reward, encouraging more spending until nothing is left. It is like a compulsive gambler, just one more bet, then they will stop. >Consumption is an addiction. Saving can be an addiction too of course, where there are people like hoarders who obsessively hold onto everything, regardless of the value and, are unable to let go of anything, even when they know it is valueless. But, there are far more consumer addicts than saver addicts I would imagine, because there is far more incentive and encouragement to keep spending what we have, whether it be our time, money or attention. There is an endless competition to extract all the value possible from us, and a constant set of new mechanisms to leverage our behaviors to generate wealth to extract. Who knew that someone could make money from people's photos of their lunch, yet - billions has been made to the point that restaurants design their products to be photographable by amateurs with a phone, so they will want to eat there more often. Essentially, what the social platforms are doing, is using consumption as a mechanism to drive behaviors that lead to more consumption, creating collateral that will keep spiraling through trends that shift consumer behavior, to spend more time, money and energy on chasing the cycle. It is the ability to create a self-filling pool of behavior, where the products change, but the process reminds the same. Buyer behaviors haven't shifted much, just the products and services they buy has. And, just like how we crave sugar, we now have an endless supply of consumer options to choose from that give us that addiction hit, and the next catalogue to start the hunger again. We keep spending endlessly, never having enough to invest when it is most beneficial to do so, never storing nuts for the winter. While I don't think there is some centralized cabal organizing this mechanism, economics is driven by the flow of money through trade and corporations are algorithmically driven to produce value for shareholders. This means that there is financial incentive in a key area of the economy that impacts on everyone, and alignment is going to happen toward profit making, which is through directing the behavior of the masses. This means that even without a conspiracy, the corporations operate in the same vein, and there is incentive from government to support them, as tax money is ultimately derived from business activity. >The economic incentive isn't for saving, it is for spending. And it fits into our evolutionary genetics to eat when there is food, even though these days, we (mostly) have a very high food availability. There is always something more to buy and, the lifecycle of these things is getting shorter and shorter, driven by them both not lasting as long, as well as social and cultural lifecycle, making things disposable, even though they are technically still working and doing their job. For example, incremental improvements or cosmetic changes in products that don't really add much value, but we feel we need to have. It is hard to be a holder in this world, and it is very, very difficult for most of us to get to a point we have anything to hold in the first place. Not only is the cost of living increasing relative to earnings, there is an avalanche of new ways to spend and our FOMO (another natural response that is encouraged) kicks in and we spend more, leaving less in storage for spending on generative activities that build ownership. If we don't have ownership, we don't have a staked voice, but this doesn't mean we don't have power. Because as consumers, we are also the driving force of the supply and what has value. Currently, we are encouraged to spend on what doesn't give us ownership power, but rather increases the profits for those we buy from so they can increase their ownership instead. >The growing wealth gap. If we want to change the situation, we have to learn that we are the ones who have to change our behavior and that is never really what anyone wants to do, because it is rarely easy or quick. And, improving the economy isn't going to happen over night, even if everyone were to start changing their behavior today, as it takes time for new, healthier processes to align. But, not starting means to continue to support the path we are on, the status quo, which will never lead to where the majority wants to go. We might want the results, but actions need to be made. If we are thrifty we are judged as stingy or miserly; and if we spend it everyone criticises us because we don't investโฆ We are simply insatiable. ๐ There is an old moral about an old man and his grandson who are walking along pulling the rope of a wall, they pass through a village and the old man is criticised for carrying the child on foot. The old man puts the child on the donkey and continues on his wayโฆ In the next village, the child is criticised for leaving the old man on footโฆ The child gets off, and the old man gets on the donkey and continues on his wayโฆ They pass near a hamlet and the old man is again criticised because it is he who rests on the back of the donkey and not the boy, so they both get on the donkey and continue on their wayโฆ They pass by a nomadic community, and they say that poor donkey with those two riding on the beastโฆ Finally, the boy and the old man get on the donkey and continue on their wayโฆ ๐ The moral is the same with the economy. I am one of those who think that we should work and produce to earn our livelihood and any luxury we can afford. It is difficult for me to save because I live day by day as if it were my last day. I was born naked and when I die, maybe they won't even put a shirt on me, most likely I'll be crematedโฆ Well, I pay an insurance for these things. Life is so short, so fleeting, that it's unthinkable to give me material thingsโฆ

>If we are thrifty we are judged as stingy or miserly; and if we spend it everyone criticises us because we don't investโฆ We are simply insatiable. I say spend it - but spend it on something that generates value, not something that burns it. :) Living day by day is fine, until there is need. Having children dependent for example, is a need and living day by day is not fair on them. They shouldn't suffer for parental hedonism, should they?

You know what they say about having a bird in hand versus two in the bush. ๐ That being said, lets just talk about savings/investments as you mentioned. I've found that it is actually a skill to be picked up. If you parents are savvy investors who've imparted these skills to you since you were young, it is almost second nature to be able to see the foresight and greater eventual gains. What about food too? Some parents would say to finish all your food and not waste a single bit of it at all, even ignoring the fact that you are already bloated and overly full. Eating past a certain point is detrimental. I think (part of) my point is that all these behaviours are more easily trained a young age. And certain "negative" behaviours come from a position of scarcity. Different social economic classes will act in certain ways just because that is how they were brought up.

>Some parents would say to finish all your food and not waste a single bit of it at all, even ignoring the fact that you are already bloated and overly full. I've got a friend who I would say is probably addicted to saving. I was having a talk with her the other day about how she is saving all this money but it isn't working for her at all. She has tens of thousands of dollars sitting in a savings account and hardly any money in investments. It baffles me how she can be letting all that potential slip away!

It is funny because I reopened an old text book the other day and found a reference to Kotter's Change Management Model. Although this is almost always in reference to organizational change, I started wondering if it could be applied to affecting individual change as well being that I am trying to under go my own. Not sure why I bring this up, but just thought it might be worth mentioning as it is ione of the most widely used, and considered most effective models' for change. I think it is because I am one who always wants a plan before taking action I guess.

Hive teaches you good habits as we are hording to earn more long term. I think it is easy as it takes discipline with the hope one day we can buy and do what we want without any worries. Another 5 years may sound like along time to the average Joe, but not once you have already been doing it for that long. I had a prime example on a comment on my post today as they missed everything entirely and no surprise they have no or little stake. I think it's easy to hold the real estate, provided that you have maintenance part covered. I used to be very much addicted to savings. And kind of suffered due to the same. Some of the changes that I faced in this context is basically demanding people in my family who wanted my money. And it's hard to handle such bad people. In short, life is kind of moment specific, some people have to spend when time comes otherwise it is dust. Not spend too much because there will be rainy days.

Like I've said before and will say again, I'm all out of fight to try and change things here at home, but I'm very willing to make a change by picking up and moving somewhere else. For me, the ability to save will come from reducing expenses, not really working harder or earning more. I'm not looking for added responsibilities.

People need to get their minds out of the consumer model and I haven't seen that despite the hard times right now. Last I checked, people were still racking up a ton of credit card debt and I also agree that people need to change that to earn wealth. While investing could be risky, I still think it's better to have that money work for you. Posted Using [LeoFinance Beta](https://leofinance.io/@jfang003/re-tarazkp-6wv9rp)

Firstly, there was a time in my life when I hated to save very much. I have always believed that I will have more money as long as I'm spending the one with me but it does not always turn out to be that way. It mostly goes the other way round. Saving is a habit and there are also other habit that I feel like human beings should imbibe so as to change the world positively. There is a stage that everyone will reach in his or her life and the person will realise that he or she needs to save money. We are human beings and we never can tell or predict the kind of things that will happen to us very soon so it is good to save so that we are going to have a way of solving the emergency problem. You said something about everyone starting to change their behaviour today and it will take a lot of time which is true but do you think everybody can change their behaviour? Do you think it is everyone who is willing to change? Some people are not ready for the change and it is bad. They are ignorant

Ah, the iPhone. Enviable how a mere mention of a new model inspires more attention in my younger sister than the vast intricacies and applications of blockchain techโ Wow. I guess, I do understand the reluctance. Then again, I have a question. Could we make the game of saving and producing more engaging than consuming? Could we make consuming more productive? I think thatโs the hook for my pitch. I like HIVE because I consider it an answer to the above questions. Iโm learning to cook and stacking books to compound saving and reduce spending. I mean, my favorite food is the sandwich- namely, the cheeseburger. Surely I donโt have to spend 15$ every time I want one, right? Right??

>Enviable how a mere mention of a new model inspires more attention in my younger sister than the vast intricacies and applications of blockchain techโ And it costs a dolphin worth of HIVE! :D Isn't producing more fun than consuming already? It should be, as that is what we are made to do - so what has happened?

A person who works for daily, weekly, monthly wages needs to change their mindset to invest wisely. You need to understand that the profit is visible from a distance and you can often find yourself in a long drawdown (on a fall, itโs also good to buy an asset with free money). As for frugality, the main thing is what percentage of profit a person earns and from what capital. From a certain point, you can ignore everyday expenses.

I think as the years pass by, we don't want change or don't tend to change. Thus, changing something is better when under 30s. We have a good proverb; *A tree is inclined to lean when wet*

Not sure about that these days - I think the young are the ones who are stuck in place. They are conditioned to support the current situation and fight to keep it.

Early in my career, I became interested in general success principals. Not the specific tactics which people use with little foresight in certain situations. Like universal truths which can be milder to apply to most situations. Income diversification is one of those things I decided was good for everyone. Having money coming in from different places lightens the spirit when one of your income streams is in a downturn. Plus, having dogs in many races makes for a greater chance to win if you can shift focus and hover over each accordingly. Another is duplication. When you can duplicate your value in other people and opportunities, then you arenโt stuck screwed when you are unable to trade your hours for dollars. These are not really naturally conducive to fitting in with a system we are fooled into believing is anything but a machine to fleece us for profit. Still good things to think about when changing the game for ourselves. Savings? I suppose that would be an indication that you are ahead of the race which would be nice. I resent keeping money in the bank, earning a pittance of interest, and enabling the banks to lend it out 10-fold for their own profit. Especially since HBD pays out 20% apr and can be used for a growing list of things. Such great conversations and socialization of strategies going on lately. Great to be a part of it.

Oh, when I say savings, I should have elaborated more - I don't mean actual savings - I mean *not spendings on crap* :) Can you expand a bit on the idea of duplication? - I haven't heard of that before.

Agreed on a lot of points you discuss. The savings rate offered by banks inspire laughter. A wry laugh with undertones of sadness, for the situation in which we reside grows more unsightly. Even since a boy, the premise that the rate on savings being so small bothered me. But as you said, the socialization of strategies does give one hope.
