In den letzten Jahren hat es enorme Fortschritte bei der Drohnentechnik gegeben. Dank moderner Akkus, Smartphones und VR, sind auch Drohnen viel smarter und auch erschwinglich geworden.

Drohnen profitieren sogar von der VR-Entwicklung, da FPV-Drohnen auch mit VR-ähnlichen Headsets (und Controllern) gesteuert werden.

Aber was sind FPV Drohnen genau?

Drohnen sind generell unbemannte Flugkörper, aber mittlerweile meint man mit Drohnen die populären funkgesteuerten Quadcopter, die vier Roteren und eine Kamera besitzen.

FPV steht für "First Person View", gemeint ist, dass man das Kamerabild der Drohne live auf ein VR-ähnliches Headset überträgt, wobei es kein VR-Headset ist, eher ein Mixed-Reality Headset, da man ja die Realität und nicht VR überträgt.

Diese Drohnen wurden bzw. werden ursprünglich mit einem Controller mit zwei Sticks (Gimbal) ferngesteuert, ähnlich wie einen ferngesteuerten Helicopter.

Und genau in dieser Steuerung liegt der große Unterschied zwischen FPV und Smart-Drohnen, wobei diese Grenzen in Zukunft immer weiter verschwimmen werden.

Ursprünglich als FPV-Drohnen bezeichnete Drohnen sind so wie Dumb-Phones, bieten kaum Computerunterstützung in der Steuerung der Drohne und sind daher extrem schwer zu fliegen.

Habe vor Kurzem den Liftoff Drohnen-Simulator am PC ausprobiert und war überrascht, wie schwer es ist eine FPV-Drohne zu steuern. Das ist wirklich nicht ohne und erfordert wahrscheinlich monatelanges hartes Training.

FPV-Drohnen werden im Prinzip mit Rotationsbewegungen entlang 3 Achsen (x, y, und z) und einem Schub-Regler gesteuert, der Pilot ist für die Stabilisierung und Höhenkontrolle und alles weitere selbst verantwortlich.

Im Gegensatz stabilisieren sich smarte Drohnen mit Hilfe von Sensoren und GPS automatisch und werden eher positional wie in einem Videogame gesteuert, was viel intuitiver und einfacher ist als die ursprüngliche rotationale Steuerung.

FPV-gesteuerte Drohnen verlieren auch die Fähigkeit einfach im Raum zu schweben, einer der großen Vorteile von Quadcoptern, da es manuell extrem schwierig ist, eine Drohne alleine mit Rotationsbewegungen an einem fixen Punkt zu stabilisieren.

Dazu kommt, dass die Stick-Kontrolle von Drohnen extrem sensibel ist. Um eine Drohne, die sich mit mehr als 100 km/h und einer extremen Beschleunigung im Raum bewegt, mit einem kleinen Stick zu steuern, erfordert eine enorme Präzision. Oft sind das mikroskopische Bewegungen im sub Millimeter-Bereich, die man ausführen muss. Das erfordert eine chirurgische, unglaubliche Präzision.

Der Vorteil von FPV-Drohnen ist, dass man damit auch akrobatische Figuren und vor allem Drohnen-Rennen fliegen kann, während sich Smart-Drohnen eher für das Filmen aus der Luft (Luftaufnahmen) spezialisiert haben.

Aber diese Grenzen verschwimmen immer mehr und es gibt auch schon neue Controller-Ansätze aus der VR-Welt, wie man Drohnen in Zukunft einfacher und intuitiver steuern könnte. Ähnlich wie mit einem VR-Controller anstatt mit Sticks oder einem Gamepad.

Denke, da wird es in der nächsten Jahren einen enormen Schub an innovativen Controllern aus der VR-Welt geben.

In recent years, there has been enormous advances in drone technology. Thanks to modern battery tech, smartphones, and VR, drones have also become much smarter and more affordable.

Drones even benefit from VR development, as FPV drones can also be controlled with VR-like headsets (and controllers).

But what exactly are FPV drones?

Drones are generally unmanned aerial vehicles, but nowadays the term drone refers more to the popular radio-controlled quadcopters that have four rotors and a camera.

FPV stands for “first-person view”, which means that the camera image from the drone is transmitted live to a VR-like headset, although it is not a VR headset, but rather a mixed-reality headset, since it transmits reality and not VR.

These drones were or are originally remote-controlled with a controller with two sticks (gimbal), similar to a remote-controlled helicopter.

And it is precisely this control that is the big difference between FPV and smart drones, although these boundaries will become increasingly blurred in the future.

I recently tried the Liftoff drone simulator on my PC and was surprised at how difficult it is to control an FPV drone. It's really not easy and probably requires months of hard training.

FPV drones are basically controlled with rotational movements along 3 axes (x, y, and z) and a thrust control, with the pilot responsible for stabilization, altitude control, and everything else.

In contrast, smart drones stabilize themselves automatically with the help of sensors and GPS and are controlled more positionally, like in a video game, which is much more intuitive and easier than the original rotational control.

FPV-controlled drones also lose the ability to simply hover in space, one of the great advantages of quadcopters, as it is extremely difficult to manually stabilize a drone at a fixed point using rotational movements alone.

In addition, the stick control of drones is extremely sensitive. Controlling a drone that moves at over 100 km/h and with extreme acceleration in space with a small stick requires enormous precision. Often, microscopic movements in the sub-millimeter range. This requires surgical, incredible precision.

The advantage of FPV drones is that they can also be used to perform acrobatic maneuvers and, above all, drone racing, while smart drones are more specialized for aerial filming (aerial photography).

But these boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred, and there are already new controller approaches from the VR world that could make controlling drones much easier and more intuitive in the future. Similar to using a VR controller instead of sticks or a gamepad.

I think there will be a huge surge of innovative controllers from the VR world in the next few years.
