I would absolutely classify it as something different entirely. To even say it is a blogging platform is a bit of a misnomer. That used to be the case for sure, but it has changed so much over the past year or so that I don't think it fits into one specific category.

The Steem blockchain is getting new pieces added to it every day. It is a place to get answers to questions, read reviews of eating establishments, watch videos, play games, read interesting stories.

With all of the pieces that are being added to Steem I think eventually it could become a one stop shop for all forms of entertainment. Actually, not just entertainment either. There are plenty of educational articles and videos on the blockchain as well.

Steem is not just a social media platform, or a blogging platform, or merely just another cryptocurrency. It is actually more than all of these combined. Steem is a next-generation blockchain technology "designed to tokenize content web" and change how we assign value in the Internet.

First, it's important to understand what is Steem and what it isn't.

Steem is not Steemit.com, the blogging platform that most Steemians use to interact with the blockchain. It is not Steemit Inc., the privately held company founded by Ned Scott and Dan Larimer in 2016, which is also responsible for the launch of the Steemit.com blogging platform. And it is not STEEM, the cryptocurrency and one of the three tokens produced and used in the blockchain, the other two being the Steem Dollar (SBD) and STEEM Power.

On the contrary, Steem is more than just a social media platform, or blogging platform, or a content platform. You could even say that it's more than just a cryptocurrency the way that Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency. Steem is more than all those things.

So, what is Steem, then?

Steem is a next-generation "blockchain designed to tokenize the content web". Put simply, it is a decentralized, social platform that combines aspects of social media, cryptocurrency, and online communities. It's goal is to reward participation by sharing the economic benefits of user-generated content (a commodity worth billions of dollars) with those who contributed them, and not just keep them in the pockets of the big companies that control the content platforms they're published in like Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter.

Why is it more than just a social media, blogging, or content platform? While Steem offers the functionalities of a social media, blogging, or content platform, Steem is also more than just a place where you can go to write a blog post, make a comment, or like a meme.

Steem is actually an entire blockchain, and an advanced one at that. Being a blockchain brings with it certain benefits that you could never get with just another content platform. Here, every piece of content is immutable, free from censorship by authorities, and unhampered by annoying ads. And because of the growing number of DApps and services built on Steem, its content ecosystem actually offers more functions and services that no social media platform could rival.

But, more than that, what really sets Steem apart is the fact that in the blockchain content distribution does not endanger your copyright. Whereas attribution can be lost overnight in other social media platforms, the same will not happen in the Steem blockchain.

Since Steem was created around the use case of content publication, it uses the blockchain itself to validate all transactions, especially authoring content. So, every author will have an authenticated, public proof with a timestamp of when and where a piece of content first originated. This therefore gives authors undisputed proof of ownership of their content, which could potentially stand up in court, once our laws catch up with blockchain technology.

Steem is also more than just a crpytocurrency. This is because Steem is not just building an economy that rewards content. In a way, it is also realigning the economic incentives of the Internet.

In today's information age where people are constantly consuming and relying on information in almost all aspects of our lives, information has become an important economic commodity. There is no place that this is more true than in the Internet where every post, every like, and every comment (even the negative ones) brings unprecendented value to some of the biggest tech companies today. All well and good when the big companies benefiting from the content are also the ones who produced it.

But, for companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit whose content is generated by the millions of users who voluntarily contribute to these platforms, the benefits of producing content doesn't actually go to the people who produced them. Instead, they go to the big companies that own the platform that the content was published on.

This is what Steem aims to change. Through its crypto economy, it aims to realign the profits generated by user-generated content toward all the people who contributed. This way, all contributors gets a share in the profits reaped from the content.

The idea is bigger than just the Steem blockchain, though. Once people realize they do not have to give away their content for free with these other platforms, other platforms will have to share their rewards with users if they want to keep their platforms active and their users happy. Eventually, other platforms will follow and the entire information economy will be forced to correct itself and realign how rewards are distributed in the web, thus creating an Internet where that rewards useful contributors with actual value.

So, would I classify Steem as a social media platform? Definitely not. Doing so is belittling what Steem actually is. Instead, I would call Steem something else...a revolutionary blockchain technology that is designed to tokenize the web and change how content is rewarded in the Internet.

Sources:

Steem Website. https://steem.io/

Steem Whitepaper. https://steem.io/steem-whitepaper.pdf

For me it is not a social network, and I explain why, the system of rewards gives it that touch that makes it totally monetary, most people who are in steemit do not share by sharing as is normally done in a social network, and the value that is given to the vote and the steem power to have that monetary value makes the people who participate in it, do not give their vote based on quality or perhaps on the good of a post on an emotional level, but are always based on the monetary value of the steem power and is not something that people give you with pleasure, as it happens in other social networks where people are happy that someone is pregnant or a photo where you are on a beautiful trip and share and people like and gives you like, in steemit that does not happen, because people think first of their voting value and how much it will cost to give you like or upvote and therefore then evaluate the post, it will never be the same as other social networks, there will always be that stigma of how much I lose if I vote and how much I win for healing and if it affects the bias of voters.

I would tell you that it looks more like an article market where people ende their publications offering something in return, that is remarkable at first sight in the trends where almost always those who occupy them with the most votes are articles where they offer rewards or contests, votes or cures, or something that generates some benefit to the voter, you can see for yourself when you like.

The one who has enough voting power makes voting circles and votes himself, and the others look for bought votes or to belong to groups of help where they vote you, in if there is not that freedom that characterizes the other social networks, for the matter of the money, it is like the stone of lock to evolve towards something better.

Nope, Steem is nothing as a social media platform, exactly contrary as a matter of fact.

STEEM is a decentralized, immortalized blockchain -meaning, whatever you post on it stays here forever. Not only that, it will most likely be censorship resistant in case you didn't make enemies with few whales on the way

I'm not saying it's not possible, but from my experience, the STEEM whales usually accept REAL INFORMATION open handed & actually encourage it. So that won't be a problem

STEEM uses a #proofofbrain algorithm that actually allows you to monetize your creativity, ideas, expertise ( if you know how to do it obv).

Whereas, on classic social media, no matter how good you are at something - you'll most likely feed the greedy corps with your talents

Wonder how? well not only they'll collect all the data they can in their power (FB was even proved to record phone calls, watch you through the camera, save the past searches, deleted content etc) they'll expose you to various corps 24/7 and sell your time + integrity to them while making money for themselves

Did you realize who makes nothing in the process & loses his privacy? Correct, that's you. Well you lose something even more important, the most precious asset - TIME! So, invest your time wisely, rather do it in "decentraland" rather than old, slave - centralized systems

And on STEEM, you can always keep your privacy - PRIVATE, if you feel about it that way

So is STEEM a social media platform? No it isn't, it's way much more. You can look at it like the "New Generation of Decentralized Social Platforms"

So that won't be a problem
\n
STEEM uses a #proofofbrain algorithm that actually allows you to monetize your creativity, ideas, expertise ( if you know how to do it obv).
\n
Whereas, on classic social media, no matter how good you are at something - you'll most likely feed the greedy corps with your talents
\n
Wonder how? well not only they'll collect all the data they can in their power (FB was even proved to record phone calls, watch you through the camera, save the past searches, deleted content etc) they'll expose you to various corps 24/7 and sell your time + integrity to them while making money for themselves
\n
Did you realize who makes nothing in the process & loses his privacy? Correct, that's you. Well you lose something even more important, the most precious asset - TIME! So, invest your time wisely, rather do it in \"decentraland\" rather than old, slave - centralized systems
\n
And on STEEM, you can always keep your privacy - PRIVATE, if you feel about it that way
\n
So is STEEM a social media platform?
Steemit is most certainly a social media platform, but it's a social media platform with a difference. Steemit was basically the first of its kind, before it, there was no other platform where people could get rewarded by making posts.

Steemit is definitely a social media platform, but it's also so much more than that. The reward system on steemit basically places it on a whole nother level. To put it simply steem can basically be called a blockchain based social media platform.

I think that's the best way to put it.

Steemit is more of a blogging platform than a social media platform. The interaction level in steemit can't be compared with other social media platforms. Though I believe that it would get better with time.

The Steem blockchain, with all of the dapps and platforms coming out is so much more than just a social media platform. Steem is so ahead of its time that it can't be categorized with traditional terminologies.

Some of the front-ends of the Steem blockchain like Steemit.com and Busy.org could be seen as social media platforms. But, as you might already know they have a crucial difference when compared to other social media platforms which is that, they take away the power from the greedy corps like facebook and instagram who take all of the profits for themselves and return it to the driving force behind the value, the userbase.

Then we got dapps like Dtube which do the same but, in the video content creation spectrum, Vimm.tv for live streaming, Steepshot.io for pictures, Steempress for converting blog posts into Steemit posts, Musing.io for Q/A's, Actifit for fitness, Fundition for fundraising, and many others with more coming out every week. All of them blong to different categories, with their roots beeing the Steem blockchain, they have the motive to reward their users for the work they put into creating content for mentioned platforms.

With all of the dapps and projects that are built on top of the Steem blockchain and with all of the new ones coming out that are all in different spectrums and serve different use cases Steem is increasingly hard to categorize as one thing when it's so much more than that.

So what is Steem then?

Steem is the blockchain of opportunity

A place where hard work, persistency and quality is, and will always be, appreciated and rewarded accordingly.

A place for developers to create revolutionary dapps and projects that will shake the world to its foundations and offer monetary rewards for things most of us usually do elsewhere, but never get paid for it.
