json_metadata | "{"app":"Musing","appTags":["work"],"appCategory":"work","appTitle":"What techniques can a manager use to re-mobilize a totally unmotivated team when he can not use salary increases or bonuses?","appBody":"
I personally think there is quite a lot a manager can do in this scenario.
\n
Motivations
\n
Firstly, different people are motivated by different things.
\n
Some people are motivated purely by money, in which case, these people are probably going to be fairly resistant to any attempts to inject enthusiasm into the team that are not based on money.
\n
Most people, however, are only partially motivated by money; mostly people are motivated by respect, friendship, doing a good job, making a difference, etc.
\n

\n
Step One:
\n
If a manager doesn't know already, they need to work out or find out why the team is completely demotivated. Was there a particular event that caused unhappiness, do they feel like management doesn't respect them, etc.
\n
Finding and resolving the root cause of any lack of motivation is crucial. It honestly doesn't matter what a manager tries to do to lead a team if the underlying issues persist.
\n

\n
Step Two:
\n
Lead from the front. A team cannot respect a manager who doesn't work as hard as they do, isn't willing to do the jobs that the staff do, or doesn't understand the daily struggles. The manager has to establish trust and respect within the team, and that often means working harder than the team. People respect hard work.
\n

\n
Step Three:
\n
Shifts in culture are crazy hard to achieve, even the top companies struggle with this. However, in the various jobs that I've had, I've noticed that the strongest teams are the ones where the team really enjoys each others company and respects each other. Teambuilding events can be a little bit daggy, but they do totally work... sometimes a night out or a fun event will bring the team together... ideally the event should be an adventure where people create stories with their teammates. It really makes an absolutely huge difference.
\n

\n
Step Four:
\n
If possible, try and reconfigure the team... establish the strengths and weaknesses of each team member and try and use that to the team's advantage. If possible, try to get rid of the people that are toxic in the team... or create an environment where they would have to either work harder or leave.
\n

\n
This is a huge topic and obviously not one that can be solved in one forum post... but I hope this helps! Great question!
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f36cnt7lx","appParentAuthor":"ss3333","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

Showing your team that you are not above them and scared of work will change what and how they think of you very quickly.
\n
If you understand the job they are doing you should stop and see problems as they arise. I know every job my team members are doing as I have done it before. I know how long each task takes and will never ask someone to do something i have never done before.
\n
Having this attitude I have all the respect in the world and money is never an issue. If i ask someone to do something they will just do it. They know I have their best interest at heart and if they do extra work and there are no financial rewards or bonuses on offer I will give them a morning or an afternoon off at some point when we are quieter.
\n
There are loads of benefits that you can entice them with which aren't monetary. I have never had to bribe them with it either but I will give it for work done. gaining respect is the biggest issue you have if they are only worried about monetary rewards. They should want to work for you and it is that simple. You may find there is a ring leader amongst them winding them up and you need to find out who is putting these thought s into their heads and get rid of that person. Poison in a team is deadly and can stop whatever you are doing.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f36cnt7lx","appParentAuthor":"ss3333","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |

Sincerely, the appreciation that managers and senior managers should be a priority and should be said more often than they usually express.
\n

\n
We usually forget how much we really need those who do our work to make us money. Without them you really would have that company ?? I don `t believe.
\n

\n
Apart from gratitude, the problem is that we see those who do certain jobs as moneymaking machines and that is one of the worst problems that every company has, however big or small it may be. Yes, people need the company as much as the company needs them and I think relationships could be a little better.
\n

\n
Utopically there would be a company that pays well to its employees, be grateful to them and they feel good with employers but unfortunately everyone is there to make money, and after not being honest with it, they make a banner of lies and everything remains the same of evil.
\n

\n
It is good to make money, it is the only thing that does not get out of poverty, but socially it is so frowned upon that it can also be why the majority is discouraged.
","appDepth":2,"appParentPermlink":"f36cnt7lx","appParentAuthor":"ss3333","musingAppId":"aU2p3C3a8N","musingAppVersion":"1.1","musingPostType":"answer"}" |
